Dr. Optimator’s 60X1.CAM Ultimate Interactive Webcam Surveillance System For Homeland Security

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Dr. Optimator’s 60X1.CAM (UIWSSHS)¬†is an interactive installation that utilizes web technology to examine the voyeuristic nature of internet surfing as well as the conflicting relationship of virtual and given reality. In the installation, the gallery itself is monitored by three separate web cams and streamed online at http://www.60CAM.com/ (now obsolete).

The devises in the room, a blender, massage chair, a television, emergency, strobe lights and lots more are all controlled over the internet in real time by people watching the gallery from anywhere in the world. Within a context of increased National Security and observation, this use of technology poses questions of power, choice and privacy in a media that is largely unchecked.

The project was reviewed by RES magazine and ARTWEEK and has shown in the following venues:

  • “Bay Area Now 3”, Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, San Francisco, U.S.A., Oct. 26, 2002 to Jan.12, 2003.
  • Kearny Street Workshop, San Francisco
  • Experimenta, Australia
