This sleeve is dedicated to my family. The 觀音 Guan Yin (Chinese Goddess of Mercy) represents my Grandma. She raised me with immeasurable compassion, and taught me great lessons that make me the man today. Thank you Grandma! She is holding a feather, which symbolizes the Chinese feather duster she used to punish me for wrongdoing.The Guan Yin is being protected by a Chinese Dragon (hence 5 claws), which represents myself since I was born in a Dragon year. There are Jasmine Flowers floating around because 茉莉, which means Jasmine is my Grandma’s Chinese name.
In my inner bicep is a Chinese Huangshan Pine Tree 黃山苍松 scenery representing my Dad. The imagery came from a painting by a Chinese artist 贺天健, whom my parents name me after. The dragon is holding and protecting a purple sphere in his claws, which represents my Sister Wini. Altogether the tattooing time is around 22-23 hrs, it’s faster than I thought and it is probably because I have a skinny arm. Also my tattoo artist Kris says I have good skin, so the ink just “fly straight in”. All the pictures below were taken the morning after the tattoo session, hence apologize for the swelling of my arm. Will take some proper picture after it completely heals. 1st Session- 2003- 5 hrs (at Los Angeles at Sunny’s friend’s house)
2nd Session- May 10th, 2013- 3.5 hrs (at Daredevil Tattoo, NYC)

Sunny Buick is an old friend of mine from San Francisco. She began her career apprenticing at the legendary tattooist Henry Goldfield in North Beach. We met through mutual friends and after seeing her beautiful paintings and tattooes I told myself I gotta get piece from her no matter what. At the time she was getting ready to move to Paris permanently. So Young and myself drove 7 hrs from San Francisco to Los Angeles and visited her.
The first 5 hrs Outline Session we did it on a kitchen sink counter at her friend’s house in LA right before she flew to the land of baguette! The original inspiration was a Beijing opera mask, then Sunny added her signature magical elements of Dia de Los Muertos Sugarskull and Old School Traditional Americana motives. And I am proud to say that after all these years, I was her last American customer before she moved to Paris 10 years ago. MERCI BEAUCOUP SUNNY!!! I guess I have a perfect excuse to visit Paris now I totally feel reborn! Can’t wait to finish it!!! There will probably be one or two more sessions.
